Surviving the Humid Summers of the South
Since moving to the south, I have struggled to enjoy the humid summers. I went for a walk this morning and seemed to have come back covered in sweat and slime. I am sure this is a familiar feeling to anyone who has experienced humid climates. But as a newbie to this weather I am wondering… can I not only survive this weather, but can I enjoy it?
This summer I don’t want to retreat to the comfortable AC of my home, I want to enjoy the outdoors. I know I struggle with the humidity and mosquito bites, so I am looking into what could help with the muggy and the buggy summer of the south and allow me to enjoy this year better.

To start, I tried to look at the bright side of these things:
- Humidity can help your skin stay hydrated. I will start skipping my lotion application since the humidity has got me covered when it comes to moisture.
- Humidity and plants are friends so your garden will thrive. At least something around me will enjoy the climate during these months, and in turn I can enjoy what my garden produces!
- Humidity can help your respiratory system. So, while the heat feels more oppressive and it’s difficult to spend long stents outside, I will enjoy the fact that I can breath while I am outside.
- Lastly, mosquitoes are prominent in TN because of this climate- the humidity and the abundant sources of water and lush vegetation. So, at least I live in a beautiful state that allows all types of plants and animals and bugs to thrive… even if they carry west Nile virus.
Now, on to things that are supposed to help with my survival this summer:

Avoid The Bugs (somehow) and Stay Cool!
- Umbrellas (are not just for rain); Frogg Toggs to stay cool (like a shamwow but better- see below); Fans (obviously); Cold snacks and drinks (stay hydrated!)
-
Swim! Here is a list of water to enjoy around Nashville
- Bug repellant and keeping home free from mosquito breeding (meaning no stagnant water!)

Ultimately, I will give it my best shot this summer. However, I will give myself grace, as I will have a toddler to chase after and will be very pregnant in my third trimester. Regardless, I am excited to see what this summer in Nashville brings.
